These Sapphires were Mined, Cut and Polishes in Australia during the 1980's.
Asian cut cabochon Sapphires in the 1970's and 1980's were usually cut with a heavy rounded back to preserve the weight and therefore appear as CHEAPER per CARAT, but in fact MORE expensive per PIECE.
As the stone did not have a distinct girdle and were rounded, the setting had to be made to both accommodate the heavy back and with long claws to hold the rounded stone.
Our stones have a sharp girdle and no excess weight on the back which is flat.
This meant that our stones cut be dropped straight into a setting made for a faceted stone, something usually not possible with the Asian style of cutting.
In fact, the back of our stones are such that they could look quite interesting UPSIDE-DOWN..., especially in a gent's ring.
