These Cabochon Sapphires were; "Mined, Cut and Polished in Australia" during the 1980's.
Please note: these photos were taken under both normal fluorescent office light (deep coloured stones) and a LED desk lamp (lighter colours) to enable inclusions to be visible.
Our stones were cut with minimal weight at the back and with a proper setting edge which meant the claws can be shorter and therefore stronger as well as having a good grip on the stone's sharp setting edge.
They were very much different from the bulky, rounded football shaped stones from Asian countries where saving as much weight as possible to make the carat price as low as possible was the driving purpose.
This may make the Aussie stones appear as more expensive per carat, but in reality they are not.
For example; an Asian cut stone with high cab and a heavy rounded back might weigh 4 carats and be priced at $100 per carat = $400.
Our stones of the same length and width (which is actually what one can SEE when in jewellery) might weight 3 carats and, at say $133 per carat = $400...
On the face of it 33% more expensive, yet same size face, less hassle in setting, a slick rather than a bulky look and far less chance the stone will come out of the setting and get lost.
Perfect for bracelet due to their uniform low profile or as matching pairs for earrings.
And not least of all: "Mined, Cut and Polished in Australia"!
